Most daycare directors start as teachers. To become a director, you’ll typically need classroom and leadership experience, early childhood education (ECE) coursework or a degree, and in some states a director credential. Many states also set a minimum age, often 21. The exact rules depend on your state and sometimes on the size of the center.
1. Build classroom experience
Nearly every state counts experience with young children toward director qualifications. Time as a lead teacher also teaches you what your future staff deal with every day, which makes you a better leader.
2. Take on leadership roles
Assistant director, lead teacher, and team lead roles are the usual stepping stones. Ask your director for chances to help with staff schedules, tours, onboarding, or inspection prep. Those are the skills hiring managers look for.
3. Meet your state’s education requirements
Requirements range from a CDA plus experience to a bachelor’s degree in ECE, depending on the state and center size. Some states require a specific director credential, such as Director I or II in Massachusetts or the Oklahoma Director’s Credential. Many also require coursework in child care administration. See our guide to child care director requirements by state.
4. Learn the business side
Directors manage enrollment, budgets, tuition billing, staff schedules, and licensing compliance. Courses in administration or a national administrator credential can help, but on-the-job exposure matters most. If you can say you’ve helped grow enrollment or prepared for an inspection, you’ll stand out.
5. Apply and interview
Director interviews focus on real results: enrollment numbers, staff turnover, and inspection outcomes. Come ready with specific examples. Search for assistant director roles too. Many centers promote from within.
