How to Get a CDA Credential

Introduction

The Child Development Associate (CDA) credential is the most widely recognized credential for early childhood educators in the U.S. It’s awarded by the Council for Professional Recognition, and many states accept it toward lead teacher or director requirements. To earn it, you complete 120 hours of training and 480 hours of work experience, build a portfolio, pass an exam, and complete an observation visit.

Who can earn a CDA

You need a high school diploma or GED, or you can be a junior or senior in a high school career and technical program in early childhood education.

Choose your setting

Each CDA is tied to the age group you work with:

  • Infant and Toddler (birth to 36 months)
  • Preschool (3 to 5 years)
  • Birth to Five
  • Family Child Care

Steps to earn your CDA

  1. Complete 120 hours of training covering the 8 CDA subject areas, such as safety, child development, and family relationships. Many community colleges and online providers offer CDA training.
  2. Get 480 hours of work experience with the age group and setting of your credential.
  3. Build your Professional Portfolio following the CDA Competency Standards book.
  4. Collect family questionnaires from families of the children you work with.
  5. Apply and pay the fee. The assessment fee is $525.
  6. Take the CDA exam at a Pearson VUE testing center.
  7. Complete the verification visit. A CDA Professional Development Specialist reviews your portfolio, observes you working with children, and meets with you. The exam and visit must be done within 6 months.

How long a CDA lasts

A CDA is valid for three years from the date it’s awarded, and then it must be renewed. See the Council’s CDA renewal guide for current steps.

Ask your employer about sponsorship

Many child care centers pay for CDA training and fees, and some states offer scholarships. If you’re interviewing, ask whether the school sponsors the CDA. It can save you hundreds of dollars and often comes with a raise when you finish.
