Hiring in Washington

Hiring here is different

MERIT certificates

Lead teachers, assistant teachers, directors and assistant directors all need ECE certificates verified in MERIT. A rule that took effect August 1, 2026 set the deadline at August 1, 2030, and people hired or promoted later get 5 years from their hire date, which gives you room to hire people who are still finishing.

Early Achievers

If you accept Working Connections (WCCC) for children not yet in school, you have to take part in Early Achievers, and professional development and training is one of the areas it rates. We ask where each candidate stands on certificates before you interview them.

ECEAP

Under the 2026-27 ECEAP standards, lead teachers need an associate or higher in ECE, and assistants need the ECE Initial Certificate. You can still hire either one with a high school diploma, as long as they’re on a Professional Development Plan and qualify within 5 years.
